    Oceanside Photographers Assn

    The club membership consists of over 50 photographers from novice to professional and everything in between. Our members live, work and play in a photographer’s paradise, the east coast of Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

    We meet once a month in Qualicum Beach, with half the meeting devoted to education, and the other half covering club business. We also have a dedicated education meeting, optional assignments and one field trip each month, tying into special events in the area as much as possible.

    The goal of the club is to promote learning, sharing and the enjoyment of photography in a convivial atmosphere. We welcome new members whether beginners or more experienced photographers. We encourage all members to share their knowledge with each other whether photography or use of their camera and equipment

    MIKE BELLIS Haida Carver

    COUNTING RINGS

    Mike Bellis is a Haida artist born in Victoria, BC in 1973. He is inspired by Haida mythology and culture, and interprets that through his own interactions with the natural world. Working mostly with red and yellow cedar, Bellis enjoys combining the time-honoured beauty of traditional Haida art with contemporary shapes, colours, and design.

    Bellis hails from a family with multiple generations of Haida artists. His father John Bellis has been instrumental in passing on knowledge of traditional Haida design. Master carver Bill Bellis is his cousin, and captain Andrew Brown is his great grandfather.

    Bellis is a citizen of the Haida Nation of Old Massett, and was born into the Eagle Clan

    This starter Zentangle class is a fun and relaxing way to explore the world of Zentangle.  We’ll learn some basic ‘tangles’ as well as the philosophy and method of this satisfying art form.  Anyone can create beautiful art using structured patterns, pen, and ink!

    All supplies included in this class.

    About the Instructor:  Rhonda Roy discovered Zentangle in 2015, became a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) in April 2016 and has been teaching Zentangle classes and creating Zentangle Inspired Art since then.  Rhonda believes we are all born with a need and an ability to create, and that Zentangle is a great way to awaken that creative side in us all.

    A fun and easy session that introduces students to create dynamic drawings using line and shades of watercolour. Instruction will include artwork examples along with demonstrations.

    If you enjoy this class, try Gordon’s ‘Wet Media Drawing’ Art Foundations class Mon Feb 13 and learn more about drawing with wet mediums like watercolour, ink and gouache.

    All supplies included in this class.

    About the Instructor:  Gordon Wilson enjoys taking seemingly complex art styles and making them accessible and easy to learn.  He has a degree in design and education and has taught in high schools for 15 years, as well as other venues.  Prior to teaching Gordon was a commercial designer and illustrator for 20 years working in television, publishing, and advertising.

    Nanaimo Art Gallery is pleased to present Story Keeping, an exhibition of new and existing work by Calgary based artists Brittney Namaakki Bear Hat and Richelle Bear Hat. Drawing from their shared Blackfoot and Dane-zaa Cree heritage, the artists look to storytelling practices and legacies of land and language displacement through their experiences growing up in rural and urban environments. While Story Keeping will include the 2016 collaborative work: Little Cree Women (Sisters, Secrets & Stories), it will also highlight Brittney and Richelle’s individual practices and perspectives. Through photography, video, sculpture, and installation, this exhibition celebrates the value of stories carried through everyday lives.

    Story Keeping is the fourth exhibition through which Nanaimo Art Gallery asks the question, What stories do we tell?

    If you have ever thought about playing the ukulele but have never even held one; or have been strumming for a while but would like to brush up your strumming skills and learn how to pick a tune, this six-week course of one hour group lessons will guide you through those elements.

    The cost is $150.  If you don’t have your own ukulele, email me and I can guide you through the process, recommending where and how to buy one.

    teaches you basic finger picking skills, how to pick chords and how to pick a tune introducing, you to simple TABS.

    Pre-requisite for both workshops – players should be able to strum and change between basic chords

    Knox Presents... "Holiday Horns" featuring The Festive Brass, a 12 piece Brass and Perscussion ensemble, joined by the Village Voices Choir with Artistic Director Patricia Plumley.

    Over 20 years or so ago, Butchart Gardens in beautiful Victoria B.C. wanted to add some live music for patrons as they strolled through the light displays during their holiday season. A brass group was hired to play ‘festive’ music toggling with a group of traditional carolers.

     Throughout the years, the brass became extremely popular as we combined top-notch musicianship with quirky arrangements of well-loved holiday classics, and some additional cheeky humour interacting with our audiences.

     With a library approaching two hundred arrangements, almost all of which have been written by the members of the group, we playfully boast the ability to play almost any Christmas tune upon request, and we may even tell you: "If we don't know it, we'll fake it."

    Go on, take a bite!

    Have you been curious about trying an art class, but not sure what medium you would like? Not ready to commit to a full class (and art supplies) if you don’t know you’ll like it?  Why not try this sampler course?

    Art Bites is a course designed to give you a taste of a variety of art mediums. Each 2-hour class introduces you to a new medium and show you the basic techniques using a small array of supplies. Everything is provided; you don’t have to bring a thing!  Go home each week with a piece of your own and a sense of how this art medium works.

    Pick and choose one or more classes. Classes are $35 each.  

     

    AM classes are 10am-12pm;  PM classes are 1-3 pm.
