    Tides & Moons: Herring Capital is a new animated art installation by Cindy Mochizuki that shares memories and stories from Japanese Canadian fishing and boat building families who populated Nanaimo shorelines before World War II.

    Throughout her practice, Cindy has developed multi-media installations, fictional audio works, performances, animations, drawings, and social collaborations that relate to Japanese Canadian experiences in B.C and Japan. She works with members of these communities and often includes her paternal family’s history both within internment camps and as repatriated Japanese Canadians in Japan after the war.

    In the early 1920’s Japanese Canadian fishers lived and worked in Nanaimo at Hammond Bay (also known as Kujira Bay), Departure Bay, Shack Island (a way station for salmon and coho fishers traveling north), and Saysutshun.     Milner Christmas Magic

    Make memories with family and friends this holiday season by experiencing Milner Christmas Magic’s outdoor stroll through thousands of twinkling lights and festive window displays. Find something for everyone on your holiday shopping list in our Gingerbread Gift Shop drop off your letters to Santa in our North Pole Mailbox with a wave to Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves! Warm up with a selection of fresh hot food and refreshments for sale in front of Milner House and remember to bring cash to get your own pair of Holiday Specs holographic lenses that miraculously transform Christmas lights into magical figures! Admission runs from 5pm – 8pm with viewing until 8:30. Entry is by suggested donation of $5 per adult $2 per child or $12 per household. Dress warm and grab your camera – you won’t want to miss it!

    Do you miss singing Christmas carols with friends and family? Let's celebrate in song! Sing along with local song leader Sylvia Humble, accompanied by pianist Adrienne Hudencial and upright bassist Jean Tejkal. All voices are welcome, whether shiny or rusty, in- or out-of-tune, young or old.

    The first three events are on Saturdays (December 3, 10, 17) at 1pm at the McMillan Arts Centre. Or, sing along from home as we livestream the Dec. 17th event on YouTube. The fourth event is on December 21 at 3pm at the Nanoose Library Hall. Come to one, or all four!

    In the spirit of giving, admission is by donation ($15/pay what you can), and 25% of proceeds will go to the Society of Organized Services (SOS) and Nanoose Community Services.
