  • THE NEW HAIDA

  • Feb 6, 2024 to Mar 2, 2024
  • Location: McMillan Arts Centre
  • Description:

    Opening Reception: Saturday, February 10, 2024,  1-3pm

    THE NEW HAIDA
Traditional Haida design is the foundation of my journey as an artist. Studying ancient works,
and the art of Master Carvers of the last century is how I developed my craft and learned the
    time-honoured tradition of Haida formline.

As my skills and confidence grew, so did my creativity and desire to add my own artistic spin
into my work. Using traditional formline as an anchor allows me the flexibility to play with
contemporary shapes, colours and design while maintaining a look recognizable as Haida.

The pieces in this exhibit have purposefully departed from the dominant red typically
associated with Northwest Coast Indigenous artwork. By using softer shades of blue, green and
grey along with primary black and white, I hope to appeal to collectors who appreciate Haida
design but are drawn to more muted colours.

As always, my work features classic totems and figures of Haida mythology. While many will be
    recognizable, some hav

    Artist Statement

12369348501?profile=RESIZE_400xIn my art practice pushing the boundaries, playing, experimentation, and taking risks are important aspects. I work intuitively with most of my imagery coming from my imagination. I am a process painter which means I am not concerned about the results but rather engage with the journey. Often metaphors and messages appear in my work.  I rarely start with an idea in mind. My painting is emotion driven by the colours and marks of the understory. My paintings start with a messy background created while cleaning my brush and palette, I intuitively develop the painting from there. I use many unorthodox tools to create my paintings – key cards, skewers, forks, insulation pipe, and corks to name a few.  My goal is to stay unrestrained, free and loose in my work. I love spontaneity and happy accidents! I have been called a “Rebel with a Paint Brush”
