  • WILD BY NATURE Patricia MANSELL

  • Jul 5, 2022 to Jul 31, 2022
  • Location: McMillan Arts Centre - Oceanside Gallery
  • Description:

Born in Kent, England, Patricia moved to Canada in 1981 and resided for many years in Alberta.  She now lives in Nanaimo, BC.

She has a special interest in painting endangered wildlife.  Often something unique about the animal will inspire a painting.  She develops her paintings from research and photographing animals in the wild and enjoys bringing out each animal’s character.

     ARTIST STATEMENT

One of the strengths of wildlife art is its ability tell stories.  In my paintings I try to bring out the individuality of each animal as it goes about its everyday life.

My journey as a Wildlife Artist is one of constant learning.  No matter where I travel I am looking for opportunities – what animals can be encountered in the wild in that area, what birds could I see migrating overhead, what sanctuaries and wildlife preserves are located there.  Choosing subjects, learning about their struggles as a species, developing ideas for how best to paint them are ongoing for every painting – bringin

  • ECHOES - JOE ENNS

  • Jul 5, 2022 to Jul 31, 2022
  • Location: McMillan Arts Centre - Nemeth Gallery
  • Description:

“Echoes” is a collection of oil portraits by Vancouver Island artist Joe Enns. Stuck at home during the pandemic and seeing only masked faces in public, Joe decided to surround himself with faces in a creative way. The inspiration for each face comes from an app called “Museum by Sktchy” where people from around the world upload source photos and artists draw or paint them as an online community. The process allowed Joe to improve his portraiture skills while connecting with others in the middle of an otherwise isolating time.

    Joe’s Bio

Joe Enns is an oil painter, writer, and fisheries biologist on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Joe is self-taught as an oil painter (YouTube tutorials and magazines), and his subjects range from portraits and figures to wildlife and landscapes. He is inspired by impressionism and disruptive realism and strives to emulate these aspects in his own work with loose and messy brush strokes.

Joe’s paintings are currently showing at Attractive Distraction Fra

  • THE TALE OF ONE URBAN CREEK

  • Jul 2, 2022 to Aug 28, 2022
  • Location: McMillan Arts Centre
  • Description:

In the tradition of creating installation art with a message, the OCAC and the McMillan Arts Centre are excited to present the Summer 2022 exhibit!  The Tale of One Urban Creek is the exploration in glass, photography, acrylic and steel art mediums of the beauty and fragile nature of our special urban places. Focusing the artistic narrative on Parksville’s Shelly Creek we can follow it from its source in Errington farmland, flowing past Little Mountain, to its confluence with the Englishman River just below the Martindale Pond.

Focussing on the unique beauty of our special urban spaces, these amazing local artists bring their incredible talents to create an exhibit that will showcase the story of one of the last local waterways that bears salmon and trout populations and what we can do to sustain and even enhance them for future generations to enjoy.
