Biography

Sheena McCorquodale is a sculptor and acrylic painter based in Qualicum Bay on Vancouver Island. At Cathouse Gallery, she creates life-size figures from galvanized chicken wire, shaping dancers, swimmers, horses and other subjects with an eye for movement. Her years of life drawing inform the anatomy and gesture of her figures. Her background in commercial art includes sign design and graphics for print and television. She has also designed sets for community theatre, where she worked with wire as a framework for papier-mâché. Sketching remains a regular part of her practice, and she enjoys painting outdoors, where changing light keeps her looking closely. The open weave of the wire allows wind and light to pass through her sculptures, making them well suited to outdoor settings. A life-size dancer typically weighs between 15 and 20 pounds. Her work has travelled across Canada and the United States, and her figures have appeared in installations at Blenheim Palace in England and Schloss Laxenburg in Austria. McCorquodale accepts commissions and teaches wire sculpture workshops at Cathouse Gallery, where participants learn to shape a flat sheet of mesh into a three-dimensional form. She moved to Qualicum Bay in 2002 and is active in the local arts community. As founder and director of the Route 19A Arts Festival, she helps bring together visual artists, musicians and audiences from communities along the coastal highway. The festival gives established and emerging artists opportunities to exhibit, perform and welcome visitors into their studios through its annual open studio tour.
