Aging Artfully

Seniors Art Program — Aging Artfully

The Seniors Art Program, initiated by the OCAC on January 1, 2016, and known in the community as Aging Artfully, offers painting and arts/craft instruction for seniors in the Oceanside Region. Delivered by locally recognized artists on a volunteer basis, this program brings creativity and joy to residents in care facilities across the region.

The program currently operates in four care residences in Parksville and Qualicum Beach — The Gardens, Qualicum Manor, Cokely Manor, and Arrowsmith Lodge — as well as a biannual program at the McMillan Arts Centre for domiciled seniors.

The Seniors Art Program is built on the understanding that art is an effective form of therapy that:

  • Promotes a sense of purpose and accomplishment
  • Fosters a stronger sense of identity
  • Provides active engagement that enhances memory and cognitive function
  • Helps with feelings of depression and anxiety, boosting mood and well-being
  • Encourages relaxation and creative expression
  • Offers social interaction and opportunities to improve motor skills

The program offers watercolour and acrylic painting to seniors of all skill and care levels. Participants find these sessions to be relaxing, meaningful, and empowering — a chance to reconnect with their creativity and share in a supportive artistic community.
