Short Biography

Curiosity about the natural and built environment led me to a diploma in architecture, a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, and master’s research in environmental design.

Biography

Like many people I have felt an affinity for nature for as long as I can remember - a fondness reinforced by enjoyable, humbling, awe-inspiring, spiritual outdoor experiences in myriad activities - and my life-long artistic journey is rooted in landscape.

Supported by a forty-year career in real estate development, design and project management, my mid-career university studies in fine arts prompted exploration of light, colour, composition, sculpture, material, paint movement and abstraction. Influenced by the trailblazing campaigns of Turner, Thomson, Adams and Richter, and informed by world travel photography of the natural and built environment, my art practice embraces conceptual innovation and method refinement to create unique contemporary mixed-media artwork.

To this end, since 2001 I have focused on the tactile luminal effects of oil paint dragged, layered and rubbed on anodized aluminum or over personal photographs on di-bond panels. Optimally these images will challenge the viewer to consider what is imagined or recalled, what is real or abstract, what is fleeting or lasting, what holds static or temporal light.

Now residing in the seaside village of Craig Bay, my wife Jackie and I are happily embracing active retirement living along with our labrador retriever Ozzie Bear. I look forward to the next chapters of an evolving art practice on Vancouver Island as an exhibiting member of the Federation of Canadian Artists working in collaboration with the vibrant Oceanside arts community.
