Living the Life of a Full-Time Artist on Vancouver Island

For much of my career, I've been asked the same question: "Can you really build a successful art career from Vancouver Island?"

After twenty years as afull-time professional artist, my answer is a confident YES.

Although my paintings have travelled far beyond British Columbia, appearing in galleries across Canada, finding homes with collectors around the world, and more recently being exhibited in the United Kingdom, Vancouver Island has always remained home. I was born here, grew up surrounded by the forests and coastline of Canada's west coast, and despite years spent travelling for exhibitions, artist residencies, and research, there has never been anywhere else I would rather return to.

Like many artists, my work often takes me on the road. Over the years I have painted in Newfoundland, Alberta, the Rocky Mountains, Ontario, and countless places in between. I've exhibited in major cities, met collectors from across the country, and immersed myself in different landscapes and cultures that have found their way into my paintings.

Travel is an important part of my creative process. Every journey adds another chapter to the story of Canada that I have been painting for the past two decades.

Yet every journey eventually leads me home.

Today, my studio is in Parksville, where the rhythm of daily life feels wonderfully different from the pace of larger cities. Mornings often begin with a walk outdoors before stepping into the studio. The changing light, the towering evergreens, the ocean, and the ever-present wildlife provide a constant reminder of why artists have been drawn to Vancouver Island for generations.

There is something restorative about creating here.

The Island offers space to think. It allows ideas to mature without distraction. While many imagine that creative careers are fuelled by constant excitement, I've found that some of my strongest work emerges from quiet consistency. Painting day after day, season after season, in a place that continues to inspire me.

Living on Vancouver Island doesn't mean being isolated from the rest of the art world. If anything, technology has made it easier than ever to connect with galleries, collectors, writers, and fellow artists across the globe. Paintings can begin in a studio overlooking the Salish Sea and end up hanging in homes thousands of kilometres away.

That balance between local and global is one of the greatest gifts of living here.

The Oceanside region, in particular, has become an increasingly vibrant creative community. Artists, musicians, writers, photographers, potters, and makers all contribute to a culture that celebrates creativity and welcomes visitors eager to experience it. It's a place where art is not simply displayed in galleries but woven into everyday life.

For me, Vancouver Island has always been more than an address. It is where I return to recharge, to reflect, and to begin the next painting.

After twenty years of painting Canada, I still find endless inspiration close to home. Sometimes the greatest adventure isn't found across the country. Sometimes it's waiting just outside the studio door.

Whether you're an artist, an art lover, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of this remarkable place, Vancouver Island continues to prove that creativity flourishes where passion and community come together.

Perhaps that's why, no matter where my work takes me, this island will always be home.
