Our first festival has reached the end of the road and it’s time to celebrate! Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part this year, whether as an artist, volunteer, concert goer, presenter, or funder. You’re all responsible for the success of this event!
We started our musical road trip in Qualicum as Auntie Kate and Bijoux du Bayeux warmed up the venerable Qualicum Community Hall. The next night, the Celtic ensemble Hounds of Cuchulain “left it all on the floor” as the saying goes. A free matinee in Heard Square drew an appreciative crowd to hear vocalist Sylvia Humble, folk duo Zach and Jim, and gypsy jazz quartet String Fever. We can guarantee you’ll be hearing more from this band. To no one’s surprise, Blue Moon Marquee sold out their Sunday night concert at St. Marks’ Anglican Church. These Juno award winning artists have a strong fan base on the Island.
Events in Parksville were very well attended, starting with a stunning concert at Knox United Church celebrating the songs of Paul Simon. A “to die for” ensemble of top musicians from Courtenay, Qualicum, and Vancouver brought Simon’s hits and lesser known songs to life. The next day, the Memorial Plaza was packed with people to see emerging artists we predict will have stellar professional careers. In the evening, a lovely show at the McMillan Arts Centre combining storytelling and live music concluded the festival on a high note.
