Sunrise or Sunset was inspired by a quiet moment during a road trip from Ontario to Nanaimo, along the shores of Lake Huron.
While driving, my brother and I noticed the sky and decided to pull over. We walked through a small opening between the bushes and discovered a peaceful beach, where I sat and watched one of the most captivating sunsets I had ever seen.
In that moment, everything felt calm and still. I was reflecting on the significant change I was making — moving across the country — and feeling deeply grateful for the opportunity to begin a new chapter.
This piece captures that sense of calm, warmth, and quiet stillness. The glowing centre reflects the intensity of the sky, while flowing patterns and layers of hand-placed dots create a balance between movement and rest.
Sunrise or Sunset is about those in-between moments in life — when you pause, take it all in, and realize something meaningful is unfolding. It represents a quiet pause between where I was and where I was going.
Among the images accompanying this artwork is the photograph I took at Lake Huron — the real-life moment that inspired this painting.
