We will be welcoming Mosaic artists from across Canada, who will be hosting a wonderful series of Artist Talks, Workshops & Classes AND a community mosaics project, for all of our summer visitors to participate in! Bring your summer visitors and come and be a part of this exciting, innovative, educational, juried exhibition.

    Running July 1- August 27, 2023. Opening Celebrations: July 1st, 1-3pm. Check out the MOSAICS Artist Talks and Classes and be a part of the wonderful activities this summer at the MAC!

    Do you miss the joy of singing in community, but not a formal choir? Sing Again this summer in a fun, encouraging group, and explore your voice and creative expression, as well as learn to sing in harmony by ear. All voices are welcome regardless of age, gender, or experience - it's not about talent, it's about connection!

    You're welcome to drop in until the end June and try it out, and see if you want to join us for the summer. We'll be gearing up for a big community singalong at Knox United Church on August 26th, and learning a set of songs from ABBA and The Beatles to Cyndi Lauper and Great Big Sea, as well as a few from local bluesman Gerry Barnum (who'll be joining us at Knox). Choir members will have the option to join me on stage at the big event!

    I have two weekly groups starting June 12 and 15 (drop in open for the rest of June; email me if you'd like to join late):

    Cindy Mawle is a Vancouver Island artist who works out of her home studio surrounded by forest on the central island. Her acrylic paintings on canvas mostly depict her surrounding areas on the Canadian west coast. Her main objective in these collections of work is to express the calm and joy she experiences in each location. “I want my work to present itself as a touchstone to our natural world. I believe the more we connect to nature, whether in real time or through art, the better off we are as human beings.”

    Lucy lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. After retiring from a successful career, Lucy renewed her passion for art. Her preferred medium is soft pastels.

    Lucy is a member of the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada, Pastellistes de France, and Art du Pastel en France. She achieved Signature Status with Pastel Artists Canada and holds Active Status with the Federation of Canadian Artists.

    Her award-winning work is held in collections in Canada and internationally and has been featured in many Canadian national juried exhibitions.

    Natasha van Netten’s Southern Residents is a collection of drawings, paintings and installation works that focus on one of British Columbia’s most iconic animals. From delicate lines made with steel to tiny drawings of immense creatures, these artworks highlight the duality of fragility and strength found in Southern Resident killer whales.

    This exhibition contains a collection of small ink drawings in shadow boxes. Influenced by museum displays and zoological drawings, these works bring attention to the individual—showing the unique physical differences between Southern Residents. This collection represents specific members and shows the variations in their saddle patches, the white/grey markings on their backs, aiding researches in orca identification. The drawings are suspended like scientific specimens, bringing attention to their delicacy and giving them the appearance of swimming.

    About the Instructor:  Mary Unger was raised on the east coast of Canada and moved to BC in 1970 after six years in Montreal. She studied fine arts at Mount Allison University and took classes and workshops in Montreal, Calgary and here on Vancouver Island.  “Travel to Mexico, Hawaii, Hong Kong,  South Africa, and Europe has been a feast to the eyes and soul.”

  • Coburn Road Trail Tune Up - Lighthouse Community

  • Description:

    The Coburn Road trail runs parallel to the E&N Rail line. It starts at the end of the
    existing gravel portion of Coburn Road and ends at Henry Morgan Park. This trail is
    primarily single track and undulates through some rough and overgrown forest. The trail
    bed is primarily dirt with multiple root crossings. The trail is one of the only connections
    from the “Downtown” section of Bowser to the Jaimeson Road Subdivision, the Bowser
    Elementary School, and via the Thompson Clark Ocean trail to Deep Bay. This trail
    creates an active transportation corridor for locals, students, and tourists. Also, as it
    directly connects downtown to the Deep Bay Marina, it provides safe, off of hwy 19a
    access to the business district for folks utilizing the docks.
    The scope of maintenance is to widen and smooth the existing trail bed. This 225m long
    trail contains sections that need widening and gravel surface build up. The idea is to keep the trail typically natural, while
