    By John Patrick Stanley

    Directed by Jennifer Kelly

Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, Doubt, A Parable by John Patrick Stanley asks audiences to grapple with the discomfort of uncertainty. “What do you do when you’re not sure?” Set in the Bronx in 1964, amidst social chance, the fast-moving play centers around four dynamic characters balancing a thin line between truth and consequences.

When an unconscionable accusation is levelled against a priest, the play raises questions but answers none. “Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.”

Born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan in 1956, Grant Leier studied at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary (1974-78) before honing his skills further at the Illustrator’s Workshop in New York (1978). • THIS MUST BE THE PLACE Christi YORK and Janine DUNS

  • Oct 16, 2023 to Oct 29, 2023
  • Location: McMillan Arts Centre 133 McMillan Street PO Box 1662 Parksville, BC, V9P 2H5
  • Description:

If we were to look for any silver linings associated with the pandemic, one of them might be the increased ease with which digital connections could be made. Christi and Janine first connected through Instagram, discovering similar themes in their respective works and, even though they both lived in the Cowichan Valley, their shared ideas evolved and flowed through highly anticipated bi-monthly “art chats” on FaceTime.

During these past four years both artists stayed close to home and found inspiration in their immediate surroundings, connecting strongly to the natural environment and yet aware of connections to the wider world. Both artists are highly process driven; subjects are explored through the experimental and spontaneous act of creating. Value is placed on leaving room for discovery in the process. Looking at the final works you’d perhaps never know the meandering pathways taken to get there.
