Nanaimo Art Gallery is pleased to present Story Keeping, an exhibition of new and existing work by Calgary based artists Brittney Namaakki Bear Hat and Richelle Bear Hat. Drawing from their shared Blackfoot and Dane-zaa Cree heritage, the artists look to storytelling practices and legacies of land and language displacement through their experiences growing up in rural and urban environments. While Story Keeping will include the 2016 collaborative work: Little Cree Women (Sisters, Secrets & Stories), it will also highlight Brittney and Richelle’s individual practices and perspectives. Through photography, video, sculpture, and installation, this exhibition celebrates the value of stories carried through everyday lives.

Story Keeping is the fourth exhibition through which Nanaimo Art Gallery asks the question, What stories do we tell?

Brittney Namaakii Bear Hat is a M

    MIKE BELLIS Haida Carver

    COUNTING RINGS

Mike Bellis is a Haida artist born in Victoria, BC in 1973. He is inspired by Haida mythology and culture, and interprets that through his own interactions with the natural world. Working mostly with red and yellow cedar, Bellis enjoys combining the time-honoured beauty of traditional Haida art with contemporary shapes, colours, and design.

Bellis hails from a family with multiple generations of Haida artists. His father John Bellis has been instrumental in passing on knowledge of traditional Haida design. Master carver Bill Bellis is his cousin, and captain Andrew Brown is his great grandfather.

Bellis is a citizen of the Haida Nation of Old Massett, and was born into the Eagle Clan

This course is all about teaching you much of what I wish I was told just a little sooner in my learning process.

You will come away at the end with more confidence and understanding of this versatile medium and be able to move forward to either paint on your own or take a class without feeling like a fish out of water.  You should be able to go into an art supply store and know what many of the items are a
