Beloved Canadian PaintersA Series Presented by Terri Bowen B.Ed., M.A.

After attending these workshop(s), you will have a solid understanding of some of Canada’s historically most influential and provocative artists, particularly those who participated in the Group of Seven. You will first get a deep appreciation for their personalities and lifestyles. Then you will better understand the times during which they grew up and how they struggled to bring their artistic style to convey the power of Canadian landscapes and its people. Finally, you will paint in their style, using some of the techniques they used to record the harshness and beauty of our country.

The painting you do in each workshop can have various levels of support: – up to you and all with guidance from Terri.

  1. As a beginner or someone who is longing to have a specific painting of a member of the Group of Seven’s, you can receive a hand drawn guide (like a blackline master) for a selected painting of the artist’s so you can just focus on the painting rather than on the drawing and then painting of it OR

  1. Using provided books or bringing your own selection, you could choose one of the painter’s paintings and with guidance, recreate a likeness of it OR

  1. you can use the learning you have done to paint your own landscape in the style of the artist (bring a reference photo you would like to paint).

Dates: from 12 until 4 pm at Lighthouse Community Center in the Nordin Room in Qualicum Bay

March 26: overview of the Group of Seven and associated painters with a primary focus on

Lawren Harris, Canada’s top selling artist (for those who love blue and spiritual landscapes)

April 4: Tom Thomson (landscapes and sunsets) and Emily Carr (particular focus on trees)

April 13: A.J. Casson and Franklin Carmichael (spectacular clouds and smooth landscapes)

April 22: J.E.H. MacDonald and A.Y. Jackson (tangled gardens: perfect for the time of year!)

Cost: $60 per workshop (cash at the door) with all materials except brushes provided.

Please let Terri know if you are attending at least 3 days before the workshop(s)’ dates, particularly if you would like a hand drawn blackline master of one of the artist’s works as that takes time to set up. (These will be the last workshops for awhile as I am getting a knee replacement in late April.)
