What are Art Gems?
The Art Gems program is a multi-faceted, hand picked selection of special ‘Gems’ providing a unique experience under the instruction of well known Vancouver Island Artists.
Art Gems workshops are open to all levels of experience and will showcase a variety of mediums.
All materials and supplies are included in these workshops for the convenience of just enrolling, arriving and enjoying creating!
Each 4-hour workshop is $100 with all materials provided (except for 2-day workshop)

Beloved Canadian Painters – A Series Presented by Terri Bowen B.Ed., M.A.
After attending these workshop(s), you will have a solid understanding of some of Canada’s historically most influential and provocative artists, particularly those who participated in the Group of Seven. You will first get a deep appreciation for their personalities and lifestyles. Then you will better understand the times during which they grew up and how they struggled to bring their artistic style to convey the power of Canadian landscapes and its people. Finally, you will paint in their style, using some of the techniques they used to record the harshness and beauty of our country.
The painting you do in each workshop can have various levels of support: – up to you and all with guidance from Terri.

Unfolding the mysteries of painting a variety of water sources with oil paints.
This workshop will guide you through the secrets of painting water with focus on reflections, transparencies, light and colour, all while creating depth and shallows.
Open to all levels of experience but being familiar with oil paints will be an asset.

Making Cloth

Learn how to make cloth using a harness loom. Materials and equipment are supplied, Participants will learn how to create a warp, dress a loom and weave cloth.

Create and Prepare for Plein Air: an Art Gems watercolour workshop with Dorota Goede
Learn the ins and outs of drawing, perspective and sketching in preparation for plein air painting. Drawings will be finished in ink and enhanced with watercolour wash. We’ll also show you now to mount your paper on wood board.
You’ll take home a finished piece and be all set to venture outdoors to paint!
(This class will take place in the MAC studio, not outdoors.)Monday, May 27 (10am-2pm)

About the Instructor: Born in Poland, Dorota studied Architecture before immigrating to Canada in 1981. She graduated with Honors from Architectural Technology Program in 1983 and completed her Bachelor of Architecture Degree at University of Toronto in 1989. Dorota received extensive education in drawing, completed courses in watercolors from Dundas Valley School of Art, and recently attended a number of workshops with prominent artists.
