Programs
Individuals and groups are invited to submit suggestions and proposals for arts- and culture-related events. Most of the events and programs listed below were developed from suggestions by members of the OCAC throughout the years.
Summer Youth Arts Day Camp
This is an annual summer art camp for children from 6 to 12 years old. It is a long standing program and continues to be very popular. Each year, with the assistance of a grant from the Federal Government, we hire a university student to manage the program. Each week has a different artistic emphasis and utilizes the knowledge and skills of a local guest artist. Camps in the past have included painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and drama.
Festival of Arts
The Festival of Arts is held each March in an offsite venue. This annual event over the space of one weekend includes a number of events. Our Annual Juried Art show is exceptionally popular. It is an open show with entries from up and down Vancouver Island. It has a substantial student component with entries from three local high schools. Well over 300 entries are on display for qualified jurors to access and award cash prizes and ribbons. In past years in excess of 2,000 visitors have attended over the space of three days and many sales were made!
In addition to the art show, the Festival has featured performance vignettes by local musicians and actors, as well as demonstrations by different local groups of artisans and craftspeople. If you would like to exhibit in this year's show, an application form in downloadable .pdf file format is available through a link at the top of our Galleries Page.
Oceanside Arts Awards
Starting in 2007, the OCAC initiated an Arts Award Program. Awards are presented to community members in the following categories: Volunteer of the Year (for 2007: Allan Watson and Jeanne Ballantine), Mentor of the Year (for 2007: Hilary Whelton, B2B Youth Choir), Philanthropist of the Year (for 2007: Thrifty Foods) and Cultural Leader of the Year. Nominations to suggest worthy recipients of these awards are submitted by OCAC members and the community at large.
Music Recitals
These events are presently held on the third Saturday afternoon of most months in the Arrowsmith Gallery. Local music instructors feature performances by their students of all ages and levels of skill. Professional visiting musicians often perform in this intimate setting to the delight of all those attending. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door. Refreshments are included.
Special Events
Workshops, recitals, rehearsals and other events take place in our building on an ongoing basis on weekends and evenings. Many of these are organized by outside organizations on a rental basis. Both the Arrowsmith Room and the Classroom are in use on a regular basis (see Rentals, below).
Library
We have a small lending library for the convenience of our members. The books are accessible in the Arrowsmith Gallery during regular office hours. Members are invited to donate books of art-related subjects that they think may be of interest to the membership.
Newsletter
A newsletter and calendar is published bi-monthly for members. It is also available online through a link at the top of the OCAC website's main page.
