A Brief History

The Oceanside Community Arts Council (OCAC) was founded in 1976 by groups of local residents dedicated to promoting a wider enjoyment and appreciation of the arts and community-based cultural events throughout the wider Parksville/Qualicum Beach area of central Vancouver Island. The OCAC is a registered not-for-profit society and a registered charity.

Originally titled District 69 Community Arts Council, after the school district in which it was located, the name was changed to Oceanside in 1999. Since the beginning we have been headquartered in the upper level of the historic Parksville Superior School, commonly referred to as the "Old McMillan School", located on the corner of McMillan & Hirst Street in Parksville, BC Canada.

Parksville Superior School circa 1918 is shown below (click on to load larger image). Built in 1913-1914, it was used as a school to teach local Oceanside students until the mid 1970's. The education process continues, with a focus on the arts, into the new millennium. Through the activities of our volunteers, members and elected board of Directors we encourage and support Arts and Culture as part of the daily lives of all citizens of the Oceanside area.
